I grew up in what would now be called a micro church. On a good Sunday, if all of the wooden pews were full, the sanctuary would hold about 100 people. After graduating Bible college, I returned and served by leading the children’s ministry. I initiated a weekly children’s ministry which began drawing children from the community. I did become discouraged because others in the church said that children’s ministry was important, but I found myself the only one really passionate about it. After awhile, I was burned out and left the church.
I began attending a medium size church of around 600 where I led an Awana ministry of an average of 100 children and 30+ leaders. My passion grew and I desired to be full-time in ministry where I felt that I could do so much more. That door never opened, but the church did start a new church about an hour from where I lived. The group beginning this church were families with young children. They wanted a strong children’s ministry and I got the call to serve as the pastor of children and youth.
We began meeting in homes, then in a theater, then our own building. The church grew and drew more young families. When I started, there were about 10 children with the oldest being in 3rd grade. The children’s ministry grew to 20+ before the church faced difficult times which impacted it greatly.
Through these years, I saw the many benefits of children’s ministry in a small church, and I also saw the many trials.
Many feel alone, no one to consult who understands their situation. I want you to know that you are not alone, there are others, and there is help. My prayer is that this website and subsequent tools help you in your ministry.
